Recommendation: Beat Street

Main Post:

Beat Streed (free)

  • Game of friday (Dec 29 th)
  • Tons of level like in Candy Crush.
  • Optional in-app purchasing (IAP)
  • Can be played in either landscape or portrait modes.
  • Easy to master one-finger controls.

Can confirm: a very good game. I don’t download free games often, but to my surprise this one ended up being a keeper. The one hand controls are really good. Gameplay wise it’s nothing deep but still entertaining. I also loved the style. Kind of reminds of Scott Pilgrim.

Where did all the (good) street racing games go?

Main Post:

About ten years ago, there was a time period that I considered the "golden age" for arcade street racing games. You had Need for Speed (up to Carbon I'd say), Juiced 1 and 2, the Midnight Club series, the Burnout series and more, all relatively high profile games.

Now though, the Need for Speed series is a shadow of its former self, there's Forza Horizon (which isn't really the same type of game) and... that's it for big budget games of that avenue (to my knowledge). Hell, even the less realistic games like Flatout, Motorstorm or Split/Second all sort of fizzled out around 2010. So what gives, what killed the arcade racer?

Top Comment: I feel like the community moved to the "sim-cade" racing games, such as Project Cars, DIRT/GRID, and Forza. For casuals, even non-racing games such as GTA have good enough driving that they won't feel the need to play others. This is just a personal anecdote but I think back in the day, car culture was much bigger among young people than it is today, so that probably doesn't help the demographics of such games.
